The Big Red Ship of Life - Ink Circles - Cross Stitch Chart

This piece is inspired by the antique weavings made in Sumatra called Tampan or ship cloths. They were used in various ceremonies and contained all sorts of motifs that were symbolic of the important things in these peoples' lives.

My design is not a reproduction of one specific cloth, but more a collection of my favorite bits from dozens of examples. I've tried to remain true to the spirit of these fantastically elaborate weavings. Sadly, these weavings are almost extinct as they were used in ceremonies and not just for display.

It's a big chart, but I know you'll enjoy it as it unfolds to reveal a fully populated menagerie along with all types of humans and plants.

Stitch count is 341 x 421 with 61,537 stitches.
Estimated thread needed for 1 ply of floss over 2 on 40 count is 95 yards of 6-ply such as DMC, or 48 yards of 12-ply such as Gloriana.
